  • As we grow up, we learn that the wellbeing of those we love is more important than our own comfort.
  • "Two weeks later I stood alone on the lonely prairie of the reservation and put the sacred sage in my medicine bag" (21, para. 79).

  • "But after [Martin's friends] left, Mom said, 'no more visitors for a while, Martin. Grandpa won't admit it, but his strength hasn't returned'" (18, para. 57).
  • Martin's grandfather told him what he needed to do, and even though nobody forced him to carry out his grandfather's instructions, he did it himself, because he knew it was right.

  • Even though Martin's grandfather is very tired, he gets dressed up and acts like he's not tired so that Martin is not embarrassed in front of his friends.

How does this text change or add to my thinking?

Growing up is not just about getting older or bigger--it's not even just about getting more responsibilities. Ultimately, it's about realizing my own responsibilities and having having the willpower to carry them out--even if it's hard or uncomfortable.
